In conventional molecular communication (MC) systems, the signaling molecules used for information transmission are stored, released, and then replenished by a transmitter (TX). However, replenishment of at TX is challenging in practice. Furthermore, most envisioned MC applications, e.g., medical field, it not desirable to insert into system, as this might impair natural biological processes. paper, we propose concept media modulation based where placed outside channel utilizes already present inside system. The can assume different states which be switched external stimuli. Hence, MC, modulates state molecules. particular, exploit group photochromic molecules, undergo light-induced reversible transitions, modulation. We study usage these three-dimensional duct contains an eraser, TX, receiver erasing, writing, reading via light, respectively. develop statistical model received signal accounts distribution initial reliability control mechanism, randomness irrepressible, spontaneous switching, molecule propagation. adopt maximum likelihood detector show that reduced threshold detector. derive analytical expressions optimal value resulting bit error rate (BER), Both BER results verified computer simulations. Our reveal enables reliable transmission, validating promising alternative on emitting TXs.
